Veneers are very thin restorations that are designed to be placed on the surface of a tooth to cover defects like gaps between teeth, deep discolorations, cracks, and chips, or to correct the appearance of a “gummy” smile. Veneers can also be used to even outworn tooth surfaces so the smile appears more symmetrical, attractive and youthful, and to correct the appearance of crooked teeth. Dental veneers are made of a very strong material that can be tinted to match the neighboring teeth so the result is natural-looking and impossible to detect.
Most veneer procedures require two office visits. Veneer application begins by removing a very small layer of the tooth’s surface material to make room for the veneer so it doesn’t “hang over” the edges of the neighboring teeth. Once the surface material is removed, an impression will be taken to serve as a mold for the veneer. The impression is sent to a dental lab where the veneer is made. A temporary veneer will be placed over the tooth to protect it while the permanent veneer is being made. During a second visit, the temporary veneer will be removed, and the permanent veneer will be placed on the tooth using a very strong adhesive. A final polishing will ensure a comfortable fit.
Veneers are very durable and can last for a decade or more with proper care, including regular brushing and flossing and routine dental appointments to ensure they stay in good shape. It’s also important to avoid chewing on ice or other hard foods and to avoid using teeth as prying tools to prevent the veneer from becoming damaged or dislodged.
Most veneers and other restorations cannot be whitened with teeth whitening products or procedures. If a veneer becomes discolored, it usually will need to be replaced.
