Teeth Whitening Q & A

by Jocelyn P. Spaulding, DMD

What causes teeth to turn yellow and dingy?

Teeth can become discolored for many reasons, but the most common causes of the superficial staining and yellowing are the foods and beverages we eat and drink. Dark-colored foods and drinks like blueberries, tomatoes, coffee, tea and red wine can all cause staining, and foods that have a high acid content can soften surface enamel temporarily, making superficial staining more likely. Use of tobacco products is another common cause of tooth staining. Deeper stains can occur as a result of deep decay or infection, long-term use of medications or some systemic diseases. Root canals can also cause teeth to darken.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening works on more superficial stains, the most common type of tooth staining and yellowing. The whitening agents penetrate the upper layers of teeth, eliminating stains and gently whitening the tooth material, so teeth look healthier and the entire smile looks brighter and refreshed. Both in-office and professional-strength take-home whitening kits are available. In-office treatments use a special light-activated gel for dramatic results in a single visit.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, professional teeth whitening has been thoroughly tested and proven to be completely safe.

Is professional teeth whitening better than drugstore whitening treatments?

Yes. Drugstore treatments use whitening agents that are not as powerful as those used in professional treatments, and they also use a “one-size-fits-all” approach that can yield inconsistent and unsatisfactory results. Plus, because they’re not administered by a dentist, over-the-counter whitening kits are more likely to cause sensitivity issues. Prior to a professional whitening treatment, teeth can be evaluated to look for tiny cracks or other issues that may increase the likelihood of temporary sensitivity. Professional in-office whitening treatments can also provide patients with more dramatic results in much less time than a teeth bleaching kit purchased at a drugstore, with results visible in a single treatment.
