Invisalign® is an innovative system for straightening teeth that uses a series of clear plastic trays called aligners to shift teeth into their correct positions. Invisalign® can be used to treat most alignment issues, including overbites, underbites, crossbites, and “gaps” between teeth. Because the plastic trays are clear, they are virtually invisible while being worn.
Treatment with Invisalign® begins with a thorough evaluation of the patient’s bite pattern and alignment issues to ensure the Invisalign® system is the best option to help achieve optimal results. Impressions are made of the teeth and sent to the lab where the Invisalign® aligners are made. Once at the lab, the impressions are scanned into a computer that uses special computer-aided design (CAD) software to create a series of 3-D models that show how the teeth need to move over time to achieve the desired result. These models serve as the basis for the custom aligners. Most patients use between 18 and 30 aligners during treatment with Invisalign®, which can usually be completed in two years or less. During treatment, each aligner will be worn for about two weeks before being replaced by the next aligner in the series. Office visits take place about every six months to monitor the progression of treatment.
The Invisalign® system has become immensely popular since its introduction because of the advantages it offers over traditional metal braces:
