Dental Cleaning Q & A

by Jocelyn P. Spaulding, DMD

Why are regular dental cleanings important?

Dental cleanings play a very important role in preventing tooth decay and gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults in the U.S. While brushing and flossing are also important, professional dental cleanings use special techniques to remove hardened tartar, sticky plaque, and bacteria from areas that are difficult to reach with brushing and flossing alone. Plus, gentle abrasion helps remove superficial stains, so teeth look whiter and brighter.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

Professional dental cleaning should be performed every six months to remove built-up plaque, tartar, and stains, so teeth and gums stay healthy. Regular cleanings twice a year also enable the dentist to look for signs of decay or gum disease so they can be treated promptly in their earliest stages when treatment is simpler and less costly.

What happens during a dental cleaning appointment?

Cleaning appointments begin with a brief visual assessment of your teeth, followed by a careful cleaning of each tooth, including the areas between teeth and along the gums where bacteria are most likely to hide. The tooth surfaces will be cleaned using mild abrasives. During the cleaning, the hygienist will look for signs of gum disease that may require more in-depth techniques to correct. Once the cleaning is complete, the hygienist may provide patients with guidance to help them improve their brushing and flossing techniques so teeth and gums stay healthy between cleanings. Dental X-rays may be taken, and the dentist will perform a thorough examination of each individual tooth, making recommendations for additional treatments as needed.

What are root planing and scaling?

Root planing and scaling are in-depth cleaning techniques designed to reach below the surface of the gums to remove tartar and bacteria. Both techniques are used to treat more advanced stages of gum disease, removing disease-causing bacteria from the area surrounding the root while also smoothing the root surface so it’s more difficult for bacteria to adhere. Special antibiotics may also be applied to the area to kill bacteria that are difficult to reach.
