Crowns Q & A

by Jocelyn P. Spaulding, DMD

What are crowns?

Crowns are protective coverings that surround the visible portion of a tooth, providing additional strength while helping to correct decay and other types of damage. Crowns are made of very durable materials that can be tinted to match the surrounding teeth so they look completely natural.

When is a crown used?

Crowns are used to:

  • help correct areas of decay or traumatic damage, including chips, cracks, and fractures
  • cover large, dark fillings when replacing the filling is not an option
  • provide additional strength to damaged areas to prevent additional damage to the tooth
  • cover teeth that are deeply stained
  • provide strength to teeth that have been treated with root canals
  • protect teeth that are used to support a bridge

The term “crown” also refers to an artificial tooth used in a dental implant procedure.

How are crowns applied?

Applying a crown to a damaged tooth usually takes two visits. First, a small portion of tooth material will be removed to make room for the crown so it doesn’t crowd neighboring teeth. An impression will be made of the tooth and sent to a lab where the crown will be made, and a temporary crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it in the meantime. At the second visit, the temporary crown will be removed, and the tooth will be cleaned before the permanent crown is applied using a very strong bonding agent. Finally, the crown will be gently shaped to ensure a comfortable fit. Some crowns can be made and placed on the tooth in one visit using a technique called CEREC®, which stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.” CEREC® uses computers and other advanced technology to create a custom crown right in the office. The approach used will depend on the damage that’s being repaired and other factors.

How long does a crown last?

Today’s crowns are exceptionally durable and, with good care that includes routine dental cleanings, crowns can last well over a decade before needing to be replaced.
